New to Yoga? Here’s How to Start

Hatha Yoga

If the word “yoga” makes you picture people twisted into pretzel shapes, here’s the first thing worth knowing: that’s not where anyone starts, and it’s not what most classes look like.

You don’t need flexibility to start

This is the most common misconception, and it stops a lot of people before they try. Flexibility is something that develops from practicing, not a requirement to begin. A well-taught beginner class meets your body where it is.

The style matters more than the studio

Not all yoga is the same, and picking a style that doesn’t match what you need is the most common reason people try one class and never return.

  • If you want a slow, gentle introduction, Hatha Yoga is the traditional starting point.
  • If your needs change day to day (some days calm, some days you need to move), Multi-Style Yoga blends approaches instead of locking you into one.
  • If you’re specifically dealing with stress or restlessness and need something more active, Kundalini Yoga uses dynamic movement and breath, still accessible to beginners.

What a first class involves

Postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and usually a period of relaxation at the end. You’ll be guided through each position, modifications are normal and expected, and no one is evaluating your form against anyone else’s.

What to bring

Comfortable clothing you can move in, and, if you have one, a mat. Beyond that, nothing.

Where to try it

At Arna Holistic Wellness, all three styles are taught locally in Mauritius. The Yoga overview breaks down which one fits what you’re looking for, or you can go straight to Hatha Yoga if gentle and traditional sounds right for a first class.
