Breathing Exercises for Stress: A Simple Way to Slow Down

Of all the advice given for stress, “just breathe” is probably the most dismissed, mostly because it’s rarely explained, which makes it easy to write off as filler advice. There is a simple idea behind it.
Why breath is different from other stress advice
Most bodily reactions to a busy day (heart rate, digestion) aren’t under conscious control. Breathing is the one major exception: it’s a bodily function you can consciously slow down, which gives you a simple thing to do with your attention when you want to settle.
A simple technique to try right now
Extended exhale breathing, one of the most accessible starting points:
- Breathe in through the nose for a count of 4.
- Breathe out slowly through the nose or mouth for a count of 6–8 (longer than the inhale).
- Repeat for 1–2 minutes. Stop if you feel dizzy.
The longer exhale is what gives the exercise its slow rhythm.
This is what Pranayama formalizes
What’s described above is a simplified entry point into Pranayama, the yogic practice of breath control: a structured set of techniques, refined over a long tradition, for using the breath deliberately rather than leaving it to chance.
Where to learn it properly
At Arna Holistic Wellness, Pranayama & Breathwork sessions teach these techniques properly, adapted safely for modern life, a structured next step if you want to go further.
